A free painting studio in your browser
Puddleleaf Studio Pro is the grown-up sibling of our free colouring studio. It is built for older children, teens and adults who want to paint rather than just fill: it runs in a web browser on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to install and no account to make.
Paint the six included garden pictures, or the pages of a Puddleleaf book that comes with a Studio companion file, with eight brushes – round, pencil, wax crayon, marker, watercolour with wet edges, airbrush, ink and chalk – plus a smudge tool. Each brush can use a round, flat, chisel or angled tip, with size, opacity, flow and hardness, and stylus pressure where your browser reports it.
Mix your own colours on the plate: drag paints into it and blend them with a pigment-style model, so blue and yellow really do make green. Build depth with glazing (transparent multiply washes on a stroke or a whole layer), add linear or radial gradients inside a single space, and keep paint tidy with smart fill, gap closing and paint-inside-the-lines. Layers sit under the locked line art and can be hidden, reordered, merged and faded.
There is also an eyedropper, symmetry painting, paper textures, saved palettes, zoom, pan and rotate, undo and redo, and keyboard shortcuts. Work saves automatically in this browser on this device and is never uploaded. Export a PNG at up to twice the canvas size, or print.
Questions
Is Studio Pro free?
Yes. Studio Pro is free to use with the six included garden pictures. There is no sign-up, no ads and no in-app purchases.
Who is Studio Pro for?
Older children, teens and grown-ups who want more control: layers, brush settings, colour mixing and symmetry. Younger children usually find the simpler Colouring Studio easier, and they can switch at any time.
How does the colour-mixing plate work?
Drag paints from the wells onto the plate, then use Mix to blend them and Pick to load the result onto your brush. Mixing uses a pigment-style model (a Kubelka–Munk approximation for each colour channel), so blue and yellow make green and colours darken as they mix, much like paint. It is an approximation, not a scientific simulation of real pigments.
Does it support pressure-sensitive styluses?
Yes, where the browser reports pen pressure through pointer events, such as Apple Pencil in Safari on iPad and many Windows pens. Pressure can change the brush size, the opacity or both. Mice and fingers paint at full pressure.
Where is my work saved?
Each picture's layers are saved automatically in this browser on this device using IndexedDB. Nothing is uploaded or synced. Clearing browser data or private browsing can remove saved work, so export a PNG of anything you want to keep.
How large can I export?
You can save a PNG at the working size of the canvas (1600 pixels square on most computers, 1200 on phones and small tablets) or at twice that size. The larger export is smoothly upscaled, so it suits printing but does not add new detail.
Can I use the pages from a Puddleleaf book I bought?
If your book includes a Studio companion (.colourbook file), load it from the Pictures menu. Books loaded in either studio appear in both. Not every book includes a companion.
Does Studio Pro work offline?
After it has been opened online once, supporting browsers can usually reopen it without a connection. This has not been checked on every device, so test it before relying on it offline.
